摘要:
In this talk I present the results of the tonal adaptations of a corpus of c. 200 Malay loanwords in Hokkien (a Southern Min language spoken in Singapore and Malaysia). Stress regularly falls on the penultimate syllable in Malay, while Hokkien is a canonical “syllable- tone” language. Our principle finding, however, is that surface F0 contours of Malay words are completely ignored in the adaptation process. That is, a F0 (Low)-High-Low contour in Malay is (almost) invariably “transformed” into the tonal correspondence (Mid)-Mid- High in Hokkien. I will argue that loans are assigned to the Hokkien Mid-High contrasts on the basis of the prosodic position, which constitutes an unprecedented type of unfaithful mappings in suprasgemental adaptations. A general survey of suprasegmental adaptations in languages of the world will also be provided as a quick-and-dirty guide to the issues in question.
