摘要:In this talk I explore the nature of segmental inventories, especially from the perspective of (increasingly surface-based) phonological theory. Are segmental inventories primitive units? If not, how are they derived? At what level do constraints on segmental inventories hold? In the second part of the talk I propose a theory of segmental structure that takes such questions into consideration and present an “all-and-only” theory of possible segments, with special attention for complex segments such as affricates, prenasalized stops and segments with secondary articulation.<br>
