This talk discusses the interactions between word-level prosody and sentence-level prosody in Japanese, with a particular reference to Kagoshima Japanese. It is mainly concerned with the issue of how the prosodic structures of words are modified by sentence-level processes such as question and vocative intonation. This can be decomposed into several independent questions: (i) to what extent lexical tonal distinctions are preserved or distorted by sentence-level prosodic processes, (ii) how and to what extent tonal neutralizations occur, (iii) how sentence-level processes interact with each other. This talk tackles these questions by analyzing the original data from Kagoshima Japanese, a southern dialect that presumably affected the basic prosodic structure of Taiwanese Japanese.
