Speech and birdsong: complex motor behaviors in which patterning over time is informational. Despite major differences between these two systems in communicative function, physical substrate (sound production), scale of the animal, and brain structure, recent work has revealed much commonality in their solutions to problem of temporal patterning. Common properties include: (1) The behavior can be decomposed into a sequence of discrete motor units with relatively fixed dynamical control parameters (gestures). (2) The sequencing of the units in real time involves an internal dynamical clocking mechanism that triggers and deactivates the individual units. (3) The final patterning of sequence, kinematics, and sound emerges through nonlinear interactions between dynamics at different time-scales. Evidence for all three of these properties from recent work in speech and birdsong will be discussed.
