摘要：This presentation will discuss several aspects of a central Bornean linguistic area, an interesting part of the Austronesian world characterized by across-the-board stress shift from trochaic/penultimate stress (at the PMP level) to iambic/word-final stress. The linguistic area is also defined by a unique form of progressive vowel harmony reminiscent of more familiar umlaut patterns in Germanic languages, massively expanded vowel inventories (up to 25-30 vowels in some languages), and atypical consonant clusters. I will focus on describing the phonologies of the languages in this area, including an extended discussion on the historical phonological development of the languages, and a discussion on the link between stress-shift and vowel inventory expansion. Data used in this talk were gathered during several field trips to communities in remote Borneo, between 2014 and 2017.
