摘要:In this talk, I show that there is a recurring pattern in various ellipsis—in particular, PF- deletion—contexts in many languages. The relevant constructions include (but are possibly not limited to) fragment answers, right node raising, right dislocation, why-stripping, VP- ellipsis, etc., in languages such as Korean, Japanese, English, Serbo-Croatian, and Chinese. More specifically, under the usual assumption that syntax marks elements for deletion, I show that in some contexts, elements which are not marked for deletion can nevertheless undergo deletion when they are adjacent to a deletion site, i.e., there is an adjacency effect on such deletion. In An 2016, I dub this special instance of deletion “extra deletion”. An important consequence of this is that extra deletion allows non-constituents to be deleted, which challenges the traditional assumption that deletion can only target constituents. I suggest that what PF, the component that is responsible for determining linear order, requires of deleted elements is that they form a single continuous string, where the notion of string is defined in terms of linear order. This is in parallel with the fact that operations in syntax, the component that deals with hierarchical relations, target constituents, which are defined in terms of hierarchical relations. I argue that the adjacency effect attested in various ellipsis contexts above derives from the requirement that PF-deletion target strings of elements. The discussion also has implications for certain interface conditions restricting the kinds of elements that can undergo deletion.
