摘要:Filler-gap dependency, or syntactic movement, has been the focus of syntax since its inception. One hallmark property of movement is that it is banned in certain environments, labeled as syntactic islands. Although the patterns of island phenomena have been extensively studied, the source of this constraint remains a mystery. In addition to the traditional syntactic approach to island, several reductionist approaches have been proposed that argue island effects can be derived by processing or discourse factors. In this talk, I report several experiments on definite NP islands (*What did you read the book about?) and discuss the implications of the findings on different approaches to island effects.
