Previous studies have shown that most of the Atayalic languages have a
pre-penultimate vowel weakening rule, by which vowels before the penultimate syllables undergo reduction. This talk will focus on the Squliq dialect of Atayal, and demonstrate that there are other prosodically motivated segmental processes in the dialect in addition to the well-known vowel reduction phenomenon. Both metrical structures and syllabic positions play a role in conditioning vowel and consonant features. The interactions between segmental features and prosodic concerns can be straightforwardly formalized within Optimality Theory.
