Abstract:
In this talk I will present preliminary results of our ongoing research of lower throat articulations in languages of Taiwan. It is a team effort that includes: Celine Chang, Jennifer Huang, Hsieh Feng-fan, Peng Yuren MD, and myself as well as several participants who submitted to the nasal indignities we requested of them. I will begin with an exposition of the valve model of the STATES OF THE GLOTTIS (initially proposed in Edmondson & Esling 2006), and then describe and illustrate the six valves we propose with video clips. The valves are called:
1. The glottal fold Adductor/Abductor
2. The ventricular Encroacher
3. The aryepiglottic Sphincter
4. The epiglotto-pharyngeal Compactor
5. The pharyngeal Narrower
6. The laryngeal Elevator
While these names may sound as if the human voicing apparatus escaped from a factory designed by Rube Goldberg, they are, in fact, the product of original biological imperatives later selectively adapted for speech.
The second portion of the talk will involve a VERY preliminary report of our findings using the Olympus ENF Type V2 ultra small rhino-laryngoscope 3.2 mm to study the voiced plosive initials /b- g-/ and the finals /-p -t -k -?/ in Taiwanese and how these sounds compare to similar sounds of Vietnamese. These will also be illustrated with full motion and frame-by-frame images of the valves acting in the articulation of these sounds. We have to date studied only five speakers of Taiwanese and two Vietnamese (Ha Noi and HCM-city), so it is virtually certain much will change, as we have just emerged from the operating theater at Jhu Dong Hospital where we have carried out what, we believe to be, the first investigations of these sounds with direct visual observation.
