Topic: "Anatomy of Tough Movement"

Abstract: I argue that the subject in the tough construction moves from within an infinitival clause and that this movement dependency is formed by making use of an independently motivated process of counter-cyclic merger. I claim
that this analysis paves the way for explaining the fact that tough movement shows both A- and A’-movement properties, namely, the fact that tough movement does not show a weak crossover effect, but it can license parasitic gaps.

Topic: "Island Repair Effect of the Left Branch Condition in Mandarin Chinese"

Abstract: This study employs the island repair effect on the Left Branch Condition (LBC) to illuminate the derivation of Mandarin sluicing, by utilizing three unique properties of Mandarin island repair related to the LBC: (i) covert antecedents, (ii) contrastive modifiers, and (iii) multiple islands including LBC structures. We propose that the strong redemptive ability of repairing LBC effects in Mandarin is attributed to the construal of pro instead of deletion. Typologically, Mandarin sluices differ from Japanese and Korean sluices in that the pro of the former cannot be interpreted as a concealed cleft structure but instead functions as an implicit subject.
