講題摘要:
Triqui is the name of three languages found at the bottom, waist, and top of a mountain in Oaxaca State of southern Mexico; they all belong to the Otomanguean language family. Of the three types Chicahuaxtla has the most tones, the most complex morphological, phonological and phonetic features. Ch Triqui has 15 tone sequences, floating tones, and five level tones. It has fortis (long) and lenis (short sonorants [ne3ʔe] ‘baby’ vs. [nne3ʔe] ‘rope’. It also has obstruent initials [t d k nd ŋg kw gw t̪͡s̺̻ t̻͡ʂ t̺̻͡ɕ].
In describing Chicahuaxtla the t and d proved difficult; palate- and Linguogram studies were used to demonstrate that t and d were not dental, as report before, but denti-alveolar [t̫̻] and [d̫̻], called “long contact in the sagittal plain.” The affricates were even more revealing as the wipeoffs showed them to be [ t̪͡s̺̻ t̻͡ʂ t̺̻͡ɕ].
The affricate [t͡ʂ] turned out not to be a reflexive but a unique way of creating a “reflexive-like” sound. Cf. Ladefoged & Maddieson (1996; 25-26) for a description of retroflexives. All previous researchers of Triqui have also claimed this affricate is [tʂ].
In this talk the features of Chicahuaxtla Triqui will be outlined and the palate and linguograms will be displayed and discussed, as well as the procedure used to acquire them. The talk is intended to show the value of using this safe and simple method to discover a different view of the phonetic facts. Techniques as in http://www.linguistics.ucla.edu/faciliti/facilities/physiology/Static_Pal/webpal.htm
