講題:On aspectual marking in heritage and second-language Mandarin
時間:2020年11月25日(星期三) 12:30-14:00
摘要:In the U.S. context, Mandarin heritage speakers (HSs) are individuals who were exposed to Mandarin since birth at home, but as adults are dominant in the societal language, English. Comparing HSs and adult second language learners (L2ers) of Mandarin provides researchers with a good test case to re-examine critical factors contributing to language acquisition, mainly effects of age of acquisition and dominant language transfer (Montrul, 2016; Montrul & Ionin, 2012). In this talk, I will present the results from a Mandarin acceptability judgment task conducted with Mandarin native speakers, HSs and L2ers, examining whether (i) English-dominant Mandarin HSs and L2ers acquire the Mandarin aspectual system despite differences from English, and (ii) whether HSs have an advantage over L2ers in this domain, given their early exposure to Mandarin. This phenomenon is chosen because (a) there are clear differences between Mandarin and English aspect, allowing for an investigation of cross-linguistic influence; (b) aspect markers are an early- acquired phenomenon, which may confer an advantage onto HSs. Results show no clear evidence of English transfer of -ed to -le by HSs and L2ers as all three groups pattern similarly in the ratings of -le with state predicates. However, L2ers slightly over-rate zai with achievement predicates, which can be attributed to English transfer of -ing, consistent with prior findings (Jin & Hendriks, 2005; Guo, 2020). While HSs and L2ers did not differ significantly on any conditions, HSs are more native-like than L2ers on zai with achievement predicates. This study shows that, even with Mandarin proficiency controlled for, early exposure gives HSs a slight advantage on the early- acquired aspectual markingㄔ
